Project ABCD1234

07.09.2010 | COMPETITION, Украина

The presented solution of the «Babiy Yar» memorial complex is a landscape composition, in which the museum part is elevated, giving visitors a view on to the hidden underground chamber. The museum is a living memorial to the tragic historical events which took place on the spot where the museum is now located.

The space between the museum and the «Menorah» is formed by the «Upper» and the «Lower» areas that are connected by a system of stairs containing useful features (benches, lights etc.). The «Lower Area» is the main venue for memorial and ceremonial events.

The museum building visually separates the public space of the complex from the parking area containing 63 spaces and the adjoining garage buildings.

The main feature of the facade facing the museum square is the «Memory Wall» with the names of Holocaust victims. The wall performs an important role and symbolic function; it is a central feature of both the exterior and interior of the museum.

The museum consists of the exhibition hall and a block of service rooms. The exhibition hall is trianglular shaped and bridged by large-span structures, it is illuminated by a skylight which follows the contours of the outer walls.

The main entrance to the museum is accessible from the «Lower Area» and the service entrance from the car park.

The location of the car park means it can be accessed from the «Avantgarde» sports complex as well as from the «Road of sorrow».
