Master Plan
A new curved path will connect all the Babi Yar monuments with a new memorial complex. The path begins at the metro station and is the main access to the memorial. This half-kilometer Matyrs' Path, traversing the Baby Yar Ravine, is a vital element of the complex, symbolizing the path victims took to annihilation. The five-meter-wide way is designed as a footpath raised 50 cm above ground on flat terrain and up to eight meters above ground where it crosses ravines.
The Memorial
Underlying the design is the wish to avoid any kind of figurative sculptural form or aboveground architectural structure. The idea is to free the very soil of Babi Yar to recount the tragedy. The memorial is a 100 m x 100 m square-the Field of Memory-filled with rough local soil with an eternal flame of 16,000 gas-lit candles. The field of lights forms a Star of David. The triangular museum building is integrated into the landscape with layering. The museum's roof, a terrace over an abyss, is a ceremonial place at the edge of the Field of Memory. The lower level field and museum entrance and the upper level ceremonial place are connected with a ramp oriented to the existing Menorah.
